Data Resource – All of Us

What is the All of Us Research Program?

The All of Us Research Program’s repository is a one-of-a-kind dataset stored on the Researcher Workbench, a secure, cloud-based platform, where registered researchers can access data from surveys, genomic analyses, electronic health records, physical measurements, and wearables to study the full range of factors that influence health and disease.

Type of Data

  • Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Surveys
  • Physical measurements
  • Genomics (whole genome sequencing, genotyping arrays)
  • Wearable device data

    Years Available

    2017 to Present

    Description

The All of Us Research Program is a national effort to build one of the largest and most comprehensive biorepositories in the world. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the program aims to enroll more than a million participants from across the United States over a ten-year period. Access to this biorepository is available through the All of Us Researcher Workbench, a secure, cloud-based platform, that researchers use to analyze data from >633,000 participants and that includes electronic health records, self-reported surveys, physical measurements, wearable Fitbit devices, whole genome sequencing samples, and genotyping arrays. Strengths

    • One of the largest national precision medicine research efforts.
    • Supports replicability and helps researchers get started.
    • Available with a secure internet connection.
    • Advanced computing potential supported by R, Python, and SAS, as well as Hail and PLINK, both commonly used for genomic analysis.
    • Provides multi-modal data for diverse research applications.

        Limitation

        • All of Us is not a representative U.S. sample.
        • Data analysis requires proficiency in Jupyter Notebook, RStudio, or SAS Studio and ability to code in R, Python, or SAS.
        • A Google Billing account may be necessary to pay for analysis in the cloud.

        Availability

        • The All of Us Research Program uses a passport access model with different data access tiers. Researchers can register after their institutions have signed agreements with the program. No separate IRB approval is needed unless your institution requires it.

Both Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have signed Data Use and Registration Agreements (DURA) with the All of Us Research Program. This means individuals with an authorized email domain (i.e., @vumc.org or @vanderbilt.edu) can register to access these data. To register, please visit https://www.researchallofus.org/register/.
