Genetics of Cardiometabolic (CM) Diseases Risk Factors
What are Cardiometabolic (CM) Diseases?

CM diseases are a group of health problems that affect both the heart and metabolism. This is often caused by unhealthy eating and lack of exercise. CM diseases can include a combination of conditions such as diabetes and liver disease. CM diseases can cause illness and death.

Symptoms associated with CM conditions includes:

  • Chest pain
  • Tiredness
  • Trouble with vision or body movement
  • Numbness in hands or feet
  • Numbness on one side of the body

Risk factors for developing CM diseases include obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar levels. Not everyone with the risk factors get the CM diseases. Also, some people that never had any of the risk factors get CM diseases. More information is needed to find ways to prevent developing these conditions. This study wants to learn about what causes these diseases.

How is the research done?

The research team will use BioVU resources to find genetic information that may be linked to developing CM diseases. This can help show additional risk factors that can make someone more or less likely to get sick. The team will also look into traits, like weight or blood pressure, of people with and without CM conditions.  This can help the team find more signs of a CM disease and learn more about how CM diseases work. This can also help the team find out who is more likely to get sick or who might respond better to certain treatments.

What is the importance of this study?

CM conditions can lead to serious health complications. This research is important for learning about traits and genes that may be related to diseases of the heart and metabolism. Studying CM conditions can teach us more about the body and how diet changes and staying active can help keep us healthy.
